Cited by The Guardian as ‘One To Watch’ and nominated for Jazz FM’s ‘Breakthrough Act of the Year’, trombonist, composer, and modular synthesist Rosie Turton continues her rise since releasing her debut ‘Rosie’s 5ive’, with Jazz Re:freshed. Rosie’s music tells the tales of meditative soundscapes and improvisations: drawing on influences from modal jazz, ambient, minimalism, and a myriad of other styles to conjure abstract and surreal soundscapes to sonically wander over.
Incorporating her love of playing trombone and modular synthesizer to the centre of her compositions, Rosie has crafted a unique sound un-bound by genre, making her one of the most in-demand artists on the UK music scene. This has led to commissions by Open House Festival, Tomorrow’s Warriors, Shiva Nova, and Sound and Music, alongside performances of her music at venues and festivals such as We Out Here, EFG London Jazz Festival, The Barbican, Kings Place, and The Queen Elizabeth Hall. Rosie has collaborated, recorded and performed with artists such as Nérija (Domino Recording Co), Nwando Ebizie, Shabaka, Sarathy Korwar, Thom Yorke, Miryam Solomon, Hector Plimmer, Zoe Rahman, Camilla George and Yazz Ahmed.
2025 saw the release of maar, a collaborative album with vocalist Miryam Solomon. maar is an exploratory improvised conversation between voice, modular synthesizer and trombone. Contemplative, textural, and at times fragile, it leans into the ambivalence of sense making; a space of searching, resolving, unraveling, and finding each other again. Cited by many as ‘beautiful and ethereal’, it has been featured on Worldwide FM (Valentine Comar), and supported on the radio by Zakia (BBC Radio 6), Hannah Peel (BBC Radio 3), Soweto Kinch (BBC Radio 3), John Gómez (NTS), and Tony Minvielle (Jazz FM).
In 2023, Rosie released Wandering Wondering, a self-produced EP which was hailed by Bandcamp as one of the ‘Best Jazz on Bandcamp August 2023’, praising its new creative direction and soothing sonic balms.
Her earlier project, Expansions and Transformations: Part I & II, showcased Rosie’s growing unique voice as a composer and producer. It was championed on the radio by Gilles Peterson, Jamie Cullum, and Iggy Pop.
Rosie was commissioned by Open City in 2023 to compose a suite of music in response to the architecture and local of community of South Norwood Library, and was performed at the library by Rosie and her band.
In 2021, Rosie was commissioned by Tomorrow’s Warriors to compose a piece of music for their next generation of musicians. A Joyful Sound was performed as part of IAMWARRIOR at The Jazz Cafe, London, in 2021 and 2024.
Rosie also composes and performs under the modular synthesizer alias, Nomieye. Rooted in ambient worlds and meditative plains, Nomieye weaves together modular synthesizers, field recordings, and echoes of the natural world to create slowly unfolding sonic landscapes. It is music that breathes: shaped by intuition and always in motion.
